The Land of Flightless Birds
Imagine visiting a land where birds do not soar through the sky. Instead, they stroll along the forest floor like tiny, feathered dinosaurs. This place is New Zealand, an island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. For millions of years, New Zealand was a giant, isolated sanctuary. Because of this isolation, it became home to some of the most unusual birds on Earth, including the kiwi, the kakapo, and the takahe. What makes these birds so special is that they cannot fly.
To understand why these birds lost their ability to fly, we have to look back at Earth's history. About 80 million years ago, New Zealand split away from a massive supercontinent called Gondwana. At that time, land mammals had not yet taken over the world. Because New Zealand was surrounded by deep ocean, land mammals like foxes, wolves, and wild cats could not travel there. The only mammals that made it to the islands were those that could fly, like bats, or swim, like seals.
