The Legacy of the Old Man of the Mountain
Perched high above Franconia Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, a remarkable natural granite sculpture captivated travelers for centuries. Known as the Old Man of the Mountain, or simply "The Profile," this famous geological formation resembled the stern, jagged profile of an elderly man looking out across the valley. Composed of five separate granite ledges perched on the cliffside of Cannon Mountain, the profile was an extraordinary trick of perspective. From most angles, it appeared as nothing more than a random pile of rock, but when viewed from a specific vantage point along the lake below, the stone ledges aligned perfectly to create a striking human silhouette.
Geologists estimate that the rock formation was shaped roughly 10,000 to 12,000 years ago as massive ice sheets retreated at the end of the last Ice Age. As glaciers moved across the region, they carved out the steep U-shaped valley of Franconia Notch and fractured the underlying granite bedrock. Subsequent freezing and thawing cycles gradually eroded the surrounding rock, leaving behind the precise arrangement of ledges. Long before European settlers documented the site, Indigenous peoples, including the Abenaki, held sacred traditions and stories inspired by the monumental stone face overlooking their homeland.
