Furthermore, the construction of dams and extensive water diversion for irrigation have diminished the river's natural flow, threatening aquatic wildlife such as the endangered freshwater Ganges river dolphin.

In response to these critical challenges, significant restoration initiatives have been launched. Comprehensive government projects, such as the Namami Gange mission, focus on building modern sewage treatment plants, intercepting industrial drains, and reforesting riverbanks to reduce soil erosion. Simultaneously, scientists, local communities, and religious leaders are collaborating to promote cleaner ritual practices and raise environmental awareness. Preserving the health of the Ganga requires a delicate balance between honoring timeless traditions and adopting modern conservation practices, ensuring that this essential lifeline endures for generations to come.
