Long before he became one of the most famous children's authors in history, Roald Dahl lived a life packed with real-world adventure. He was born in Llandaff, Wales, in 1916 to Norwegian parents. His father passed away when Roald was very young, but his mother kept the family together. She filled their home with traditional Norwegian folk tales about magical creatures, giants, and deep forests. These bedtime stories sparked a lifelong wonder in the young boy's mind.
As a student, Roald attended British boarding schools. School life could be harsh and strict, but it also offered unexpected moments of magic. One nearby candy company occasionally sent boxes of newly invented chocolate bars to the school. The company asked the students to test the treats and rate each flavor. Roald spent hours imagining what it would be like to work in a secret candy laboratory, concocting recipes that nobody had ever tasted before. Decades later, these sweet memories became the seed for his most famous tales about eccentric inventors and chocolate factories.
