The Mighty Yangtze: Asia's Longest River

The Yangtze River, also known as the Chang Jiang in China, is one of the most magnificent natural wonders on Earth. Stretching an incredible 3,900 miles, it is the longest river in Asia and the third-longest river in the entire world. This mighty waterway plays a vital role in the history, culture, and economy of China, flowing through deep valleys, busy cities, and wide plains before finally reaching the ocean.

The journey of the Yangtze begins high up in the freezing glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau. Here, nearly three miles above sea level, tiny streams of melting ice trickle down the mountainside. The building of huge dams, like the Three Gorges Dam, has helped control dangerous floods and generate clean electricity, but it has also changed the natural flow of the water. Pollution from cities and factories also threatens the delicate habitats of the river's unique wildlife. Today, scientists and volunteers are working hard to clean up the water and protect the endangered species that call this majestic river home.
