The Mystery of Room 12's Runaway Hamster

Characters:
- Narrator: The storyteller who sets the scene
- Maya: A determined fourth grader with a keen eye for clues
- Leo: An energetic student who loves dramatic conclusions
- Sam: A quiet student who notices small details
- Mr. Beaker: The enthusiastic fourth-grade science teacher
Narrator: It was nine o'clock on a brisk Tuesday morning in Room 12. The morning bell had just stopped ringing when Mr. Beaker walked toward the class pet habitat with a handful of fresh lettuce.
Mr. Beaker: (gasps dramatically) Great galloping grasshoppers! Class, we have a code orange! The habitat door is unlatched, and Sir Paws-a-Lot is nowhere to be seen!
Leo: (leaping from his chair) He's escaped into the wild! Quick, seal the vents! Check the ceiling tiles! He could be tunneling under the floorboards as we speak!
Maya: Leo, calm down. Sir Paws-a-Lot is a three-inch golden hamster, not a secret agent with diamond drills. He could not have gotten far in just twenty minutes.
Narrator: Maya adjusted her glasses and knelt beside the empty habitat. She pulled a small plastic magnifying glass from her pencil case and began inspecting the sawdust trail on the table.
Maya: Look here. The trail leads away from the cage, across the table, and drops right onto the carpet beside the blue recycling bin.
