Deep in the green fields of Wiltshire, England, stands a circle of massive, towering stones. This ancient monument is called Stonehenge. Built thousands of years ago, long before modern machinery or writing existed, it remains one of the world's greatest mysteries. For centuries, people have stared at these giant rocks and wondered: Who built this, how did they do it, and why?

To understand Stonehenge, we must first look at the stones themselves. There are two main types of rocks at the site. The larger ones are called sarsen stones, which are a type of hard sandstone. These massive blocks weigh about 25 tons each—as much as four adult elephants! Archaeologists, the scientists who study human history through ancient objects, believe these sarsens were dragged from a place about fifteen miles away. The smaller rocks are called bluestones. Surprisingly, these bluestones came from the Preseli Hills in Wales, which is over 140 miles away!

How did ancient people move such heavy treasures without trucks or engines? Experts believe it took incredible teamwork and clever engineering. Builders likely placed the heavy stones onto wooden sledges and dragged them over rollers made of tree trunks. For the bluestones, they might have used rafts to float them along rivers and coastlines before dragging them the rest of the way.

Once the stones arrived, the real challenge began. To stand a giant stone upright, workers dug a deep pit with a sloping side. They slid the bottom of the stone into the hole and used thick leather ropes and heavy wooden frames to pull it upright. Finally, they packed the pit with dirt and smaller rocks to hold it steady. To place the horizontal stones, called lintels, across the top of the standing stones, builders probably built giant ramps made of dirt or wood. They pushed the lintels up the ramps and fitted them together using joints, almost like giant stone Lego bricks.

Why did ancient people put so much effort into building Stonehenge? Archaeologists have uncovered many clues. They found ancient graves around the site, suggesting it was once a sacred burial ground. They also discovered that the stones align perfectly with the sun. On the longest day of the year (the summer solstice) and the shortest day of the year (the winter solstice), the sun rises and sets in perfect alignment with specific stones. This suggests Stonehenge may have been a giant solar calendar, helping ancient farmers know when to plant and harvest crops, or a place for special ceremonies.

While we may never know all the secrets of Stonehenge, each discovery brings us closer to understanding the remarkable people who built it. It stands as a powerful reminder of what humans can accomplish when they work together.
