The October wind whipped through the neighborhood, sending dry orange and yellow leaves spinning across the sidewalk. Tomorrow was Halloween, but the excitement had already taken over the town. Aryan zipped his thick green jacket up to his chin to keep out the chilly evening air. Beside him walked Zakari, his best friend and favorite detective partner. Zakari held a sturdy silver flashlight in her mittened hand, clicking it on and off with eager anticipation.

At the very end of Maple Street stood Whispering Manor. It was a massive two-story house with dark shingles, a crooked porch, and tall windows that looked like watchful eyes. The house had stood empty ever since old Mr. Henderson moved away two winters ago. Over the past few weeks, rumors had spread all across their school. Classmates claimed they heard spooky tapping noises coming from the parlor, and some even insisted they saw ghostly white lights floating past the front windows when the sun went down.

"Are you sure about this, Zakari?" Aryan asked, staring at the shadowy silhouette of the house. "Everyone says this place is really haunted. Maybe we should just stick to carving pumpkins at home."
