The Perfect Pass

Mateo adjusted his shin guards and double-knotted the laces of his bright orange cleats. The morning air smelled like damp grass and crisp autumn leaves. All week, Mateo had thought about Saturdayâs game against the Pine Valley Comets. The Comets were undefeated, known across the county for their lightning-fast forwards and impenetrable defense. Mateo played center midfielder for the Oak Creek Strikers, which meant his job was to connect the defensive line with the attackers. Coach Henderson always called the midfield "the engine of the team."
Before the referee blew the whistle, Coach Henderson gathered the Strikers into a tight huddle. "Remember what we worked on during Thursdayâs practice," she reminded them, her voice steady. "Don't rush your kicks. Look up, scan the open grass, and trust each other. Soccer is about vision, not just power."
Mateo nodded, touching knuckles with his teammates before sprinting out to the center circle. The whistle echoed across the field, and the match began.
