Jo had only intended to add a touch of authentic flair to a vintage inventor costume for the annual Halloween parade. The centerpiece was an intricate brass kaleidoscope found in the dusty corner of an estate sale, fitted with dual rotating rings and a cloudy crystal core. While waiting by the trophy cases before the morning bell, Jo idly aligned the engraved sun and crescent moon on the artifact's brass cylinder. A quiet hum vibrated through the metal casing, followed by a faint click. A puff of lavender vapor hissed from the lens, dissolved into the cool morning air, and seemed to vanish entirely.

Twenty minutes into second-period science, the strange consequences unfolded. A flock of translucent, glowing bluebirds fluttered through the closed glass windows, darting between dangling test tubes before evaporating into thin air without leaving a single scratch or rustle.
