A bitter October breeze rattled the dry cornstalks bordering the Blackwood Community Barn, where the annual town Halloween festival was in full swing. Orange string lights cast an amber glow over carved pumpkins, while papier-mâché bats swayed from the rafters. Maya, dressed as a vintage detective in a trench coat, adjusted her magnifying glass prop and glanced at her friends, Jonah and Elena. Jonah was draped in a bedsheet ghost costume that constantly tripped him, while Elena wore the elaborate velvet gown of an eighteenth-century astronomer.

Their assignment for the evening was simple: monitor the Historical Society’s prized exhibit in the quiet northwest corner of the barn. Resting upon a velvet pedestal under a heavy glass cloche was the Blackwood Pocket Watch. Crafted from solid silver in 1888, the artifact possessed a legendary, chime-like strike that sounded like a miniature church bell. According to town lore, the watch was wound only once a year, precisely on Halloween night, set to chime at eight o’clock sharp.

"Fifteen minutes until the chime," Elena whispered, checking her wristwatch. "The whole town council is gathering near the cider press to hear it."
