The Pink Dolphin of the Flooded Forest
Deep within South America lies the Amazon Rainforest, a vast and vibrant ecosystem. An ecosystem is a community of living things interacting with their environment. The Amazon is famous for its incredible biodiversity, which means it is home to more different types of plants and animals than almost any other place on Earth. High up in the green canopy, colorful macaws scream, while jaguars prowl the dark forest floor. But during the rainy season, a magical transformation occurs. Heavy rains cause the Amazon River to overflow, flooding millions of acres of forest. This temporary underwater world is known as the flooded forest, and it is home to one of the river's most unusual residents: the pink river dolphin, also known as the Boto.
At first glance, the Boto looks like a creature from a fantasy book. Unlike their gray ocean cousins, these freshwater dolphins can be a striking shade of bright pink. Scientists believe this unique color comes from blood vessels close to the surface of their skin, which becomes more noticeable as the dolphins age. But their color is not their only amazing feature. The Boto has developed special physical adaptationsâchanges in its bodyâthat help it survive in a habitat that changes from dry land to deep water every year.
