The Rainbow Birds of Peru

Deep in the warm rainforest of Peru, there is a special place. This place is called the Tambopata National Reserve.
It is a very big forest with tall green trees. Many amazing animals live in this safe home.
The forest is full of bright colors and loud sounds. The loudest sounds come from the big, beautiful birds.
These birds are called macaws. Macaws are large parrots with long tails.
Some macaws are bright red and yellow. Others are deep blue and gold.
They fly together through the treetops. They look like flying rainbows in the sky.
Every morning, the macaws do something very special. They fly down to a giant wall of clay.
This wet clay wall is next to a wide river. It is called a clay lick.
Thousands of colorful birds meet at the clay wall. They cling to the dirt with their strong feet.
The birds use their curved beaks to scrape the clay. Then, they eat the salty dirt.
Why do these pretty birds eat clay? The clay has special salts that the birds need.
It also helps protect their tummies. The clay stops them from getting sick from wild seeds.
Seeing all the colorful macaws together is a wonderful sight. It is like a big, noisy bird party on the clay wall.
People travel from far away to see the birds. They watch quietly so they do not scare them.
The Tambopata Reserve keeps the birds and their forest safe. It is a beautiful treasure in the land of Peru.
