The Secret Beneath the Arch
Maya and her younger brother, Leo, stood at the base of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, staring up into the bright blue sky. The giant stainless-steel monument curved gracefully overhead like a silver rainbow, shimmering in the afternoon sun. They were visiting the famous landmark on a family trip, and both children were bursting with excitement. A friendly guide ushered them into one of the tiny, barrel-shaped tram cars that climbed slowly inside the hollow interior of the arch. As the tram hummed upward, Maya held her breath, imagining the brave workers who had built this towering structure back in the 1960s.
When they reached the observation deck at the peak, six hundred and thirty feet in the air, the view was breathtaking. Through the small, angled windows, Maya and Leo looked down at the wide Mississippi River sweeping past the city. Barges floated along the water like tiny toy boats, and the tall buildings of downtown St. Louis looked small enough to touch. After taking in the sights, they took the tram back down to the spacious underground visitor center and museum located beneath the arch.
