The Secret of Silk: How Ancient China Clothed the World
Imagine a fabric so soft, shiny, and strong that people would travel thousands of miles just to buy it. This is the story of silk, one of ancient China's greatest treasures. For centuries, the secret of making silk was guarded fiercely by Chinese emperors, making it one of the most highly valued products in human history.
According to Chinese legend, the discovery of silk happened by accident around 2700 BCE. Empress Leizu was sitting under a mulberry tree, enjoying a cup of hot tea. Suddenly, a small, fuzzy cocoon fell from the branches directly into her cup. The hot tea softened the cocoon, and when the empress pulled it out, she saw it unravel into a single, shimmering thread. She realized this strong thread could be woven into beautiful fabric, and the art of silk-making was born.
