The Secret World of Growing Puppies

Bringing a new puppy into a home is an exciting experience, but raising a healthy dog requires understanding how puppies grow and explore their surroundings. From the moment they are born, puppies undergo rapid physical and behavioral changes that prepare them for life as adult canines.
At birth, newborn puppies are remarkably helpless. They are born both blind and deaf, with their eyes and ears sealed tightly shut. During their first two weeks, often called the neonatal stage, puppies rely entirely on their mother's milk for nutrition and her body heat for warmth. Because they cannot regulate their own internal temperature, they sleep huddled closely in a pile with their littermates. Their only functioning senses at this stage are touch and smell, which guide them toward their mother.
Around two to three weeks of age, a major transformation begins. A puppy's eyes open, followed closely by the opening of its ear canals. At first, their vision is blurry and their movements are clumsy. As their leg muscles strengthen, they begin to wobble forward instead of crawling on their bellies. This period marks the start of the transitional stage, when puppies take their very first steps toward independence.
