The flint formed from the remains of silica-rich marine organisms, such as sea sponges, which dissolved and recrystallized in cavities within the chalk layers.

The transformation of this deep-ocean floor into towering coastal cliffs was the result of massive tectonic forces. Millions of years after the chalk was deposited, tectonic movements associated with the formation of the Alps pushed the seabed upward, creating a vast dome of chalk across what is now southeastern England and northern France. During the last Ice Age, massive glaciers and meltwater carved through this dome, eventually breaching the land bridge that connected Britain to mainland Europe. This catastrophic flooding created the English Channel, leaving the severed edges of the chalk dome exposed as towering cliffs on both sides of the newly formed strait.

Today, the English Channel is at its narrowest at the Strait of Dover, measuring only about twenty-one miles across to the coast of France. On a clear day, the French coastline is visible from the top of the cliffs, highlighting their role as a natural boundary. The cliffs remain dynamic, constantly shaped by the relentless forces of nature. Waves crash against their base, causing periodic rockfalls. While this erosion poses a threat to coastal structures, it is also the very process that keeps the cliffs white. By shedding their outer layers, the cliffs prevent soil from accumulating and vegetation from taking root, ensuring that this ancient, biological monument continues to gleam across the channel as a sentinel of British geography.
