Leo stared at his math worksheet, but the numbers looked like tiny ants marching across the page. He could not help it. His eyes kept drifting toward the desk in the front row where Maya sat. Maya had the brightest yellow sneakers Leo had ever seen, and she could kick a soccer ball further than anyone else in the third grade.
Today was a big day. In his backpack, tucked safely inside a blue folder, was a drawing Leo had worked on all weekend. It was a picture of a cat wearing a silver spacesuit, floating near the rings of Saturn. He knew Maya loved anything to do with outer space. He also knew he wanted to give it to her, but every time he thought about it, his heart felt like a drum being played by a very fast rabbit.
"Leo, are you on problem four yet?" Mrs. Gable asked, snapping him back to reality.
"Almost!" Leo squeaked. He quickly scribbled an answer, his face turning a soft shade of pink. He tried to focus on his subtraction, but his mind kept wandering back to the blue folder.
At recess, the sun was shining brightly over the playground. Leo stood by the big oak tree, clutching his folder tightly. He watched Maya playing catch with her friends. She laughed at something a classmate said, and Leo felt those familiar "butterflies" fluttering in his stomach. He took one step forward, then stopped. What if she did not like the drawing? What if she thought it was weird that he had spent so much time making it for her?
He decided to wait. Maybe lunch would be a better time. But lunch came and went, and the blue folder stayed hidden in his backpack. Leo felt a little bit frustrated with himself. Having a crush was a lot harder than he thought it would be. It was like having a secret that made him feel both excited and nervous at the exact same time.
Finally, the afternoon brought science class. "Alright, class," Mrs. Gable announced. "Today we are starting our solar system posters. I have assigned you into pairs."
Leo held his breath and crossed his fingers under his desk.
"Maya and Leo, you will work together on the planet Saturn," Mrs. Gable said.
Leo felt like he had just won a grand prize. Maya walked over to his desk, her yellow sneakers clicking softly on the tile floor. "Hi, Leo!" she said with a friendly grin. "I am really glad we are partners. You are the best artist in our whole class."
Leo’s heart did a little flip. "Thanks, Maya. I actually... I have something I wanted to show you."
He reached into his backpack and pulled out the blue folder. With hands that shook just a little bit, he slid the drawing of the space cat across the desk. He watched her face closely, feeling his breath catch in his throat. For a second, Maya was quiet. Then, her eyes went wide with surprise.
"Wow! This is amazing!" she whispered. "Is that a tuxedo cat in a spacesuit? I have a tuxedo cat at home named Oreo!"
"I remember you mentioned him once," Leo said, feeling a sudden burst of courage. "I made this for you because I know you like stars and planets."
Maya looked up from the drawing, her smile even bigger than before. "Thank you, Leo. This is the coolest thing anyone has ever given me. I am going to hang it on my refrigerator as soon as I get home."
She reached into her shiny purple pencil case and pulled out a holographic sticker of a golden star. "Here, let's trade. This is for my favorite artist."
Leo took the sticker, his nervousness finally melting away like ice in the sun. He realized that while having a crush could be scary, being brave enough to share a bit of himself was worth the effort. As they started sketching their poster of Saturn together, Leo knew this was going to be the best science project of the year.
