The Squawking Grimoire

Dorian knew better than to handle Master Vane's personal grimoire without supervision, but the thick, calfskin volume had been covered in a stubborn layer of soot from the hearth. As an apprentice of only six months, Dorian's daily duties consisted primarily of grinding dried beetle husks and sweeping the endless stone spiral staircases of the tower. He had envisioned practicing magnificent transmutations and elemental charms; instead, he spent his afternoons wielding brooms and feather dusters. Convinced that a simple purification charm would expedite his chores and demonstrate his burgeoning talent, Dorian retrieved his birchwood wand and tapped the book’s brass clasp.
He whispered the incantation, "Pura Tergo," intending to banish the soot into nonexistence. Unfortunately, an errant sneeze split the phrase in half, morphing the gentle cleaning spell into an erratic variant of an avian transmutation. A vibrant crackle of violet sparks erupted across the oak desk. The heavy leather binding flexed, sprouting a cascade of shimmering sapphire feathers. The brass clasp lengthened into a curved, golden beak, while hundreds of parchment pages compressed into rustling, ink-stained wings. Within seconds, Master Vane’s most prized possession was perched atop a stack of star charts, blinking two glossy amber eyes.
"Well, that was clumsy," the bird squawked in a dry, raspy voice that sounded remarkably like Master Vane himself. "Page forty-two clearly mandates a wrist flick, you bumbling novice!"
Panic seized Dorian as he stared at the feathered creature. "You... you can talk?"
"Of course I can talk! I contain three centuries of collected arcane philosophy, meteorological enchantments, and the master's secret pastry recipes," the grimoire snapped, preening a wing that fluttered with handwritten marginalia. "And now I am plagued by an overwhelming desire to consume sunflower seeds. Revert me at once before I molt valuable counter-curses all over the rug!"
Dorian frantically reached for the bird, but the grimoire took flight with a loud rustle, swooping gracefully toward the tower's vaulted rafters. It circled the iron chandelier, shrieking fragments of lightning spells and levitation formulas. Tiny sparks rained down upon the laboratory tables, narrowly missing vials of volatile essence. Dorian raced underneath, desperately trying to remember the reversal ritual from his introductory lectures. Every time he raised his wand, the bird dove toward him, screeching corrections regarding his posture and vocal resonance.
"Master Vane will be back from the apothecary in ten minutes," Dorian gasped, dodging a dive-bomb from the irritable creature. "If he finds out I transfigured his life's work into a winged critic, he will turn me into a toadstool!"
"Then listen closely, boy!" the bird perched precariously upon the edge of an alchemical scale. "You cannot simply brute-force a reversal on an enchanted artifact. Look under my left primary covert feathers! The glyph for absolute restoration is inscribed along the lower margin of page one hundred and eighteen!"
Dorian crept forward, breathing softly to avoid startling the creature. Approaching with gentle hands, he lifted the iridescent blue feathers of the bird’s wing. Sure enough, faint lines of emerald calligraphy glowed faintly beneath the plumage. Focusing entirely on the intricate symbols, Dorian steadied his breathing, banished his anxiety, and traced the precise geometric pattern in the air with the tip of his wand.
A gentle hum resonated through the chamber, accompanied by a soothing lavender glow. The bird shuddered, folded its wings, and smoothly unfolded back into the heavy, leather-bound volume, settling quietly onto the desktop. The soot was gone, leaving the cover pristine and polished.
A moment later, heavy footsteps echoed on the spiral stairs, and Master Vane pushed open the heavy wooden door, carrying a bundle of fresh herbs. He glanced around the pristine study, his sharp gaze lingering on his book before drifting to Dorian.
"The desk looks spotless, Dorian," Master Vane remarked, nodding with mild approval. "Though you might want to explain why there is a bright blue feather resting inside my inkwell."
