The Squeaky Sneaker Mystery

Leo was determined to be the quietest third grader in the history of Oak Creek Elementary. Silent reading time was serious business in Mr. Clark’s classroom. If the room stayed completely silent for thirty minutes, everyone earned an extra recess.
There was only one tiny problem. Leo was wearing his brand-new red sneakers.
The sneakers looked awesome, but the bottoms were made of super-shiny, ultra-grippy rubber. Even worse, the janitor had waxed the linoleum floor over the weekend. The floor was as slick as an ice-skating rink.
Leo shifted his right foot to get comfortable.
SCREEECH-HONK!
The noise echoed off the walls. It sounded like an angry goose trapped inside a locker.
Across the room, Maya clamped her hand over her mouth to stop a giggle. Mr. Clark looked up from his desk, pushing his glasses down his nose. "Was that an animal?" he asked, scanning the room.
Leo froze. He held his breath. He stared intently at his book about volcanoes, pretending he was made of solid stone.
After a minute, Mr. Clark went back to grading papers. Leo let out a quiet sigh of relief. Then his left knee started to itch. Forgetting about the shoes, he slid his left foot backward.
