The Swirling Skies of Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh was born in 1853 in a small village in the Netherlands. As a young boy, he was quiet and thoughtful, often wandering through the Dutch countryside. Although he grew up to become one of the most famous painters in history, he did not start out as an artist. In fact, Vincent tried many different jobs first. He worked as an art dealer, a teacher, and even a preacher in a poor coal-mining district. It was not until he was twenty-seven years old that he decided to devote his life entirely to painting.
In the beginning, Vincent’s artwork was very different from the bright, colorful paintings we know today. His early works used dark, earthy colors like brown, gray, and dull green. One of his most famous early paintings, called The Potato Eaters, showed a family of farmers eating a simple meal. Vincent wanted to capture the reality of hard work and the lives of everyday people. During this time, he was supported by his younger brother, Theo. Theo worked at an art gallery and sent Vincent money for paint, brushes, and food throughout his life. Without Theo’s constant belief in his brother’s talent, the world might never have seen Vincent’s masterpieces.
