The Tangled Flipper at Boulders Beach

Ten-year-old Sipho loved spending his Saturday mornings on the wooden boardwalks at Boulders Beach, near Simon's Town. From the sturdy timber walkway, he could watch the famous colony of African penguins waddling across the warm, cream-colored sand and diving into the chilly waters of False Bay. His aunt Nomsa worked as a coastal ranger at the reserve, and today she had promised he could shadow her during her morning patrol.
"Keep your eyes peeled, Sipho," Aunt Nomsa said, adjusting her wide-brimmed khaki hat against the bright morning glare. "Yesterday's strong southeastern wind blew a lot of floating rubbish toward the shore. Even in a protected reserve, ocean currents carry waste straight to the penguins' front door."
Sipho leaned over the wooden railing, scanning the smooth granite boulders that gave the beach its name. Most of the penguins were busy preening their sleek black-and-white feathers or braying loudly like donkeys—a sound that always made him grin. Near the water's edge, young birds with dull gray-blue feathers waited impatiently for their parents to return with a breakfast of anchovies.
