The Test-Taking Team

Marco stared at the math test, his palms sweating. Numbers swam before his eyes, and the familiar formulas seemed like gibberish. He felt a tap on his shoulder. He glanced down to see his pencil, Pete, standing upright.

"Hey, Marco, deep breaths! Remember what we practiced," Pete squeaked.

Marco looked around. Had his pencil just talked? He must be more stressed than he thought.

Suddenly, his eraser, Ernie, bounced onto the desk. "Pete's right! We're here for you!" Ernie chirped.

Marco’s calculator, Cal, chimed in, its tiny screen flashing encouragement. "Don't panic! We’ve got this! You've studied hard."

Marco blinked. Okay, either he was dreaming, or his school supplies had come to life. "You… you can talk?"

"Of course, we can!" Pete said, rolling his graphite tip. "We're your Test-Taking Team! Now, what’s the first step for problem number one?"

Marco hesitantly pointed at the equation. Pete, Ernie, and Cal huddled together, muttering numbers and strategies. "Okay, Marco," Pete announced, "Remember the order of operations. Parentheses first!"

Marco took a deep breath, remembering their study sessions. He carefully worked through the parentheses, feeling a bit of his anxiety melt away.

"That’s it! Now the exponents," Ernie cheered, bouncing with excitement.

Cal flashed the exponent rules on its screen. "Don't forget to square the number!"

Step by step, with the encouragement and reminders from his unlikely team, Marco worked through the test. He focused on one problem at a time, pushing aside the overwhelming feeling of panic. He realized that he actually knew most of the material. He’d just needed a little help remembering.

As the bell rang, Marco finished the last problem. He looked down at Pete, Ernie, and Cal. "I… I think I did okay," he said, surprised.

"Okay? You were awesome!" Ernie exclaimed.

Cal beeped happily. "We knew you could do it!"

Pete patted Marco’s hand with his side. "Just remember to breathe and trust yourself. We’re always here to help, even if we’re not talking."

Marco smiled, feeling a wave of relief wash over him. He carefully packed Pete, Ernie, and Cal back into his pencil case. Maybe they were just ordinary school supplies. Or maybe, just maybe, they were his secret weapon against test anxiety.
