The Treehouse Secret
Maya and Leo had been best friends since kindergarten. Every afternoon after finishing their homework, they met in Leo’s backyard under the giant oak tree. High up in its sturdy branches sat their favorite place in the world: a wooden treehouse built by Leo's older sister.
One sunny Tuesday, Maya carried a small box filled with paintbrushes and jars of bright paint up the ladder. Leo climbed right behind her, carefully balancing three smooth pieces of pine wood and a tube of wood glue. They were building a birdhouse to hang outside the treehouse window.
"I hope a family of robins moves in," Maya said, opening a jar of yellow paint. "Or maybe bluebirds!"
"First, we need to make sure the roof is sturdy," Leo replied, holding two wood pieces together. He squeezed a line of thick glue along the edge, but as he pressed them tight, a loud crack echoed in the small treehouse. A piece of the wooden roof had split right down the middle!
Leo’s shoulders dropped. "Oh no! We ruined it."
Maya leaned in to inspect the break. "It’s not ruined at all," she said softly. "We just need a little extra patience and teamwork."
