The Vibrant World of the Maasai

High on the grassy plains of northern Tanzania, beneath the shadow of giant volcanoes, lives a group of people known as the Maasai. The Maasai are famous around the world for their rich culture, bright clothing, and unique way of life. While modern cities grow nearby, many Maasai continue to live just as their ancestors did hundreds of years ago, staying deeply connected to the land and their animals.
For the Maasai, life revolves around their livestock, especially cattle. Cattle are much more than just animals; they are a sign of wealth and a gift from their creator, Enkai. The Maasai are pastoralists, which means they move from place to place to find fresh grass and water for their herds. They live in small family villages called bomas. A boma is a circle of houses made from mud, sticks, and grass. Around the outside of the boma, the Maasai build a thick fence of thorny branches. This fence protects the families and their precious cattle from wild animals like lions and hyenas during the night.
