The Visionary of Singapore: The Life of Sir Stamford Raffles
Thomas Stamford Raffles was born in 1781 aboard a merchant ship off the coast of Jamaica. Lacking the wealth of the British aristocracy, Raffles entered the workforce at the tender age of fourteen as a clerk for the British East India Company. Despite his humble beginnings, his insatiable curiosity and sharp intellect quickly distinguished him. He spent his spare hours studying languages, natural history, and the cultures of Southeast Asia. This self-taught expertise paid off when the Company dispatched him to Penang, Malaysia, in 1805. It was the beginning of a lifelong fascination with the Malay Archipelago, a region that would define his legacy and reshape global trade.
