The Wild Ponies of Assateague Island
Assateague Island is a very special place near the ocean. It is a long, sandy island with ocean waves and tall grass. Many wild animals live on this cool island. You can see big sand dunes along the beach.
The most famous animals on the island are the wild ponies. These small horses live outside all year long. They eat salty grass that grows in the sand. They drink fresh water from rain pools. People come from far away to watch the ponies walk on the beach.
The island has other neat animals too. White-tailed deer walk quietly through the green trees. Bright birds fly over the salt marshes to catch small fish. Tiny crabs crawl along the wet sand by the water.
Assateague Island is a safe home for plants and animals. Park rangers help protect the land and keep it clean. Visitors must stay far back to keep the ponies safe and wild. It is fun to learn about this beautiful ocean island.
