The Wonders of the Wooden Way
John’s sneakers clicked rhythmic musical beats against the weathered wooden planks of the Atlantic City Boardwalk. A crisp ocean breeze carried the savory scent of buttered popcorn mixed with the sharp smell of saltwater spray. On his left, massive historic buildings and sparkling towers reached toward the clouds. On his right, the vast blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean stretched out as far as his eyes could see, with white-capped waves crashing onto the soft golden sand.
John had dreamed about this day all summer. Atlantic City was famous all around the world for its bustling seaside walkway and bright, colorful energy, but John was interested in one extraordinary place in particular: the Steel Pier. Extended far out over the swirling ocean waves, the historic amusement pier looked like a floating kingdom of lights, music, and excitement.
"Keep up, John!" called his older sister, Maya, waving him forward past a bustling shop selling traditional Atlantic City saltwater taffy. Workers in bright aprons stretched sweet, sticky candy on large metal hooks inside the shop window. "If we get to the pier early, the lines for the best rides won't be too long!"
