Tisquantum: The Story Beyond “Squanto”

In popular American folklore, the historical figure often referred to simply as "Squanto" is reduced to a cheerful, one-dimensional guide who emerged from the woods to teach English colonists how to plant corn. This familiar myth obscures the far more complex and turbulent reality of Tisquantum, a Patuxet man who survived kidnapping, transatlantic enslavement, and the catastrophic loss of his community before becoming a central political broker in seventeenth-century New England.

Tisquantum was born into the Patuxet band of the Wampanoag confederacy, inhabiting the coastal region of what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. His life was permanently altered in 1614 when English captain Thomas Hunt lured Tisquantum and more than twenty other Wampanoag and Nauset men aboard his vessel under the pretense of trade. Hunt chained the captives in the ship's hold and sailed for Málaga, Spain, where he attempted to sell them into slavery. While many captives were sold, local Spanish Catholic friars intervened to halt the sales. Tisquantum eventually secured his freedom and made his way across Europe to London, where he resided in the household of John Slany, a prominent merchant and treasurer of the Newfoundland Company. During these years abroad, Tisquantum became proficient in English and gained firsthand knowledge of European trade networks, maritime logistics, and social hierarchies.
