Growing up in New Jersey, identical twin brothers Mark and Scott Kelly did almost everything together. Born just six minutes apart in 1964, the boys were energetic, curious, and always looking for adventure. When they were young, neither brother seemed destined for greatness in school. Scott often found it hard to pay attention in class, while Mark spent much of his time playing sports and working as an emergency medical technician. However, both brothers shared a love for excitement and a desire to serve their country.
Everything changed during college when Scott read a book about the brave pilots chosen for America's early space program. Inspired by the story, Scott decided he wanted to become a naval aviator. Around the same time, Mark discovered the same passion. Both brothers joined the United States Navy, learned to fly high-speed fighter jets, and became elite test pilots. Flying dangerous missions off the decks of giant aircraft carriers taught them how to stay calm under intense pressure.
In 1996, NASA made an exciting announcement. Out of thousands of skilled applicants, both Mark and Scott Kelly were selected to join the astronaut program. They became the first identical twins in history to be chosen as astronauts. Over the next decade, both brothers traveled to space on multiple Space Shuttle missions, helping to construct the International Space Station and repair scientific equipment orbiting high above Earth.
While their individual missions were historic, their most famous adventure was a groundbreaking scientific experiment known as the NASA Twins Study. Scientists wanted to know what happens to the human body during long-term spaceflight to prepare for future trips to Mars. Because Mark and Scott were identical twins, they shared the exact same genetic code. This created a rare opportunity for researchers.
In March 2015, Scott launched into orbit to spend nearly an entire year living aboard the International Space Station. Meanwhile, Mark stayed on Earth as the "control" subject. While Scott floated in microgravity, exercised on special machines, and ate packaged space food, Mark continued his regular daily life on the ground. Both brothers regularly gave blood samples, completed physical tests, and answered memory quizzes so doctors could compare their health.
When Scott finally returned to Earth after 340 days, scientists discovered several surprising changes. In space, Scott had grown two inches taller because microgravity allowed his spine to stretch out. His immune system worked overtime, and his body experienced temporary stress from the radiation in space. Fortunately, after a few months back on Earth, most of Scott's body returned to normal, and he shrank back to his original height.
The Kelly brothers proved that humans can survive extended missions in deep space. Today, both Mark and Scott have retired from NASA, but their teamwork helped open the door for the next generation of space explorers to reach the Moon and beyond.
