Deep in the green fields of Wiltshire, England, stands a circle of massive, towering stones. This ancient monument is known as Stonehenge. Built thousands of years ago, long before modern machinery or writing existed, it remains one of the world's greatest archaeological mysteries. For centuries, people have marveled at these giant rocks and wondered who built them, how they were moved, and why they were placed there.
To understand Stonehenge, we must examine the stones themselves. There are two main types of rocks at the site. The larger ones are called sarsen stones, which are a type of dense, hard sandstone. These massive blocks weigh about 25 tons each—as heavy as four adult elephants! Archaeologists believe these sarsens were dragged from a location about fifteen miles away. The smaller rocks are called bluestones. Surprisingly, these bluestones came from the Preseli Hills in Wales, which is over 140 miles away from the site.
How did ancient builders move such heavy rocks without trucks, engines, or cranes? Experts believe it required incredible teamwork and clever engineering. Builders likely loaded the heavy stones onto wooden sledges and dragged them over rollers made of tree trunks. For the bluestones, workers might have used wooden rafts to float them along rivers and coastlines before dragging them across the land.
Once the stones arrived at the site, the real challenge began. To stand a giant stone upright, workers dug a deep pit with a sloping side. They slid the bottom of the stone into the hole and used thick leather ropes alongside heavy wooden frames to pull it upright. Finally, they packed the pit with dirt and smaller rocks to hold the stone steady. To place the horizontal stones, called lintels, across the tops of the standing stones, builders probably constructed giant ramps made of dirt or timber. They pushed the lintels up the ramps and fitted them together using special joints, similar to giant stone building blocks.
Why did ancient people put so much effort into constructing Stonehenge? Archaeologists have uncovered several important clues. They found ancient graves around the site, suggesting it served as a sacred burial ground. They also discovered that the monument aligns precisely with the movement of the sun. On the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year, and the winter solstice, the shortest day, the sun rises and sets in direct alignment with specific stones. This alignment suggests Stonehenge may have served as a giant solar calendar to track seasons or as a gathering place for important social ceremonies.
While scientists may never solve every mystery surrounding Stonehenge, each new discovery brings us closer to understanding the remarkable builders who created it. It remains a powerful testament to human ingenuity, determination, and cooperation.
