Sinkholes, which occur when underground caverns collapse under the weight of the soil above, dot the surface like giant funnels, channeling water directly into subterranean drainage systems.

This continuous dissolving process has created thousands of caves beneath the Ozark Plateau, earning Missouri the nickname "The Cave State." Within these dark, subterranean labyrinths, dynamic geological formations called speleothems take shape. Minerals dissolved in dripping water gradually accumulate over thousands of years, forming dangling stalactites from cave ceilings and rising stalagmites from cavern floors. Beyond their geological beauty, these caves provide critical habitat for specialized wildlife. Organisms known as troglobites, such as the Ozark cavefish and grotto salamander, have adapted to complete darkness over generations, often lacking eyes and skin pigmentation entirely. Other species, including the endangered gray bat and Indiana bat, rely on these climate-controlled caverns for winter hibernation and nursery roosts.

Above ground, the Ozark Plateau supports a diverse array of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The surface landscape features dense oak-hickory forests interspersed with rocky, open glades—desert-like habitats on shallow soil where heat-tolerant plants and collared lizards thrive. Clear, spring-fed rivers cut through steep limestone bluffs, providing vital habitats for smallmouth bass and hellbenders, which are giant aquatic salamanders unique to clean riverways. Larger mammals such as black bears, white-tailed deer, and reintroduced elk wander the forested uplands. The intricate connection between surface runoff and deep cave networks makes the Ozark Plateau a delicate, highly interdependent ecosystem where protecting underground water quality is essential to sustaining life both above and below.
