Welcome to Mackinac Island! On behalf of the Island Tourism Bureau and Historical Society, we are thrilled to welcome you to our unique sanctuary situated in Lake Huron. Before your arrival, please review this essential informational guide regarding local ordinances, historical landmarks, transportation logistics, and guest etiquette.

Transportation and Vehicle Restrictions In 1898, local leaders enacted a permanent ban on motorized vehicles to preserve the island's tranquility and natural air quality. Consequently, no personal automobiles, modern motorcycles, or electric scooters are permitted anywhere on the island. Upon arriving via ferry at the main dock, you will discover that all transportation relies on traditional horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, or walking.

If you have reserved a horse-drawn taxi service to carry your luggage to your hotel, please present your claim ticket to the dock attendant immediately after disembarking. Bicycles are available for daily rental at multiple shops along Main Street; however, please remember that pedestrian right-of-way is strictly enforced, and working horses always maintain the ultimate right-of-way on all paved roads and scenic paths.

Victorian Architecture and Historic Sites As you explore the island, you will notice an exceptional collection of late nineteenth-century Victorian architecture. Prominent landmarks include the Grand Hotel, renowned for its expansive front porch and distinctive Gilded Age design, and Fort Mackinac, a preserved military outpost originally constructed during the American Revolutionary War.

When viewing private Victorian residences along the historic bluff walks, we kindly ask that guests remain on public sidewalks and respect the privacy of local residents. Guided architectural walking tours depart twice daily from the Visitor Center, offering detailed commentary on Queen Anne and Gothic Revival building styles.

Environmental Stewardship and Etiquette More than eighty percent of the island is protected within Mackinac Island State Park. To ensure the preservation of this historic landscape for future generations, visitors are expected to adhere to simple conservation practices. Please stay on designated paved or gravel trails, dispose of all refuse in proper receptacles, and refrain from feeding or startling the carriage horses.
