The sky shifted from a soft blue to a heavy, bruised gray as the wind began to howl through the trees. Sam watched from the window as the first heavy raindrops pelted the roof like tiny drums. His dog, Barnaby, whimpered and tucked his tail between his legs.
Sam’s mom checked her phone and frowned. "The storm is getting closer," she warned. Suddenly, a loud, wailing siren echoed through the neighborhood.
It was the signal they had practiced: it was time to head to the basement for safety. As they settled into the basement, the lights flickered and then vanished, plunging the room into total darkness. Sam felt a flutter of worry in his chest, but his dad quickly clicked on a heavy-duty flashlight.
The beam of light cut through the dark, making Sam feel a bit braver. They sat together on an old sofa, listening to the muffled roar of the wind above them, waiting for the danger to pass. The following morning, the storm had moved on, but the power remained off.
The house felt strange and silent without the hum of the refrigerator or the glow of the television. There was no hot water for showers, and Sam couldn’t play his favorite video games. Instead of complaining, Sam and his mom spread out a colorful board game on the kitchen table.
They ate cold sandwiches for lunch and told funny stories to pass the time. "It’s just like an indoor camping trip," Mom joked, and Sam started to agree. By the third day, the sun finally peeked through the clouds, turning the wet world bright again.
Outside, the yard was a mess of snapped branches and scattered leaves. Sam joined his dad in the yard, working hard to pile the debris into neat stacks. His muscles ached, but he liked seeing the yard look clean again.
That evening, just as the sun set, the kitchen light suddenly buzzed to life. The refrigerator began to hum, and Sam let out a loud cheer! He gave Barnaby a big hug.
Through the long, dark days, Sam realized that while storms are scary, his family was resilient. They could face any challenge as long as they were together.
