What It Means to Seek Safety

Imagine having to pack a single bag in just a few minutes and leave behind your home, your school, and your neighborhood. For millions of people around the world, this is not an imaginary game. It is a real and sudden journey. People who must leave their home country because it is no longer safe to live there are called refugees.
Why do people become refugees? Most often, families are forced to flee because of war, dangerous conflicts, or unfair treatment caused by unfair laws. Sometimes natural disasters damage entire towns so badly that staying is impossible. Unlike travelers who plan vacations or immigrants who choose to move for a new job, refugees leave because they have no other choice. Staying behind would put their lives in danger.
