They are all mammals.

Scientists classify animals into groups based on shared physical traits and life cycles. Mammals form one of the most diverse groups of vertebrates, or animals with backbones. Despite their amazing variety in size, shape, and habitat, every mammal shares several key characteristics that set them apart from birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

Hair and Fur

One of the easiest ways to identify a mammal is by looking at its skin. Every mammal has hair or fur at some point in its life. For a grizzly bear or an arctic fox, thick fur provides crucial insulation against freezing temperatures. Porcupines have modified hair in the form of sharp, protective quills. Even animals that seem completely smooth, such as whales and dolphins, possess tiny hair follicles around their snouts when they are newborn calves. Whiskers on a cat or sea lion are specialized hairs that act as sensitive touch sensors, helping the animal navigate dark spaces and locate food.

Feeding the Young

Another defining trait gives this animal group its scientific name: Mammalia. Female mammals have special glands called mammary glands that produce nutrient-rich milk. After giving birth, a mother mammal nurses her young until they are strong enough to eat solid food. This milk provides essential proteins, fats, vitamins, and antibodies that protect young mammals against disease. This dedication to feeding and caring for offspring is a hallmark of mammalian behavior.

Warm-Blooded Bodies

Mammals are endothermic, which means they are warm-blooded. Unlike a lizard that must sit on a sunny rock to warm up its body, a mammal creates its own internal heat. Mammals generate heat by converting the calories from food into thermal energy. Their bodies work like internal thermostats, maintaining a steady, stable body temperature regardless of whether it is sweltering hot or bitter cold outside. When mammals get too hot, they cool down by sweating, panting, or resting in the shade. When they get cold, their bodies shiver to generate extra warmth.

How Mammals Are Born

Almost all mammals give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Scientists divide mammals into three smaller groups based on how their babies develop. The largest group is placental mammals, which includes horses, dogs, and humans. Their babies grow inside the mother's body, nourished through an organ called a placenta, until they are ready to be born.

The second group is marsupials, such as kangaroos, koalas, and opossums. Marsupial babies are born very early in their development and immediately crawl into a special pouch on their mother’s abdomen, where they continue to grow and nurse for several months.

Finally, a very unusual group called monotremes consists of only a few species: the duck-billed platypus and four species of echidnas, or spiny anteaters. These unique animals are true mammals because they have fur and produce milk, but the females lay soft-shelled eggs instead of giving live birth.

From the highest mountain peaks to the deepest ocean trenches, mammals have adapted to thrive in almost every corner of our planet. The next time you look in the mirror, walk your pet dog, or watch a squirrel dart up an oak tree, remember that you are seeing a fascinating member of the mammal family.
