Where the River Meets the Sea: The Magic of the Camargue
Where the mighty Rhône River finishes its long journey through France, it flows into the salty waves of the Mediterranean Sea. This special meeting place forms a vast, triangular wetland known as the Camargue. It is one of Europe’s most unique ecosystems, where freshwater from the river mixes with saltwater from the sea. This creates a brackish—or slightly salty—mix of water. A giant network of shallow lakes, muddy marshes, and salty lagoons provides a perfect home for some of the world's most amazing plants and animals.
One of the most famous sights in the Camargue is the thousands of pink flamingos that gather in the shallow waters. These tall, elegant birds wade through the mud looking for food. Interestingly, flamingos are not born pink; they are actually gray when they hatch! Their feathers turn a beautiful shade of pink because of their diet. They eat tiny brine shrimp and algae that thrive in the salty lagoons. These foods contain a natural pink pigment, or coloring, which slowly colors the birds' feathers over time. The Camargue is one of the few places in Europe where these colorful birds nest and raise their young.
