Have you ever felt a little bit scared? Maybe you had to try something new.
Your heart might go thump-thump-thump very fast. Your tummy might feel like it has butterflies inside.
This feeling happens for a special reason. Your body has a built-in alarm system.
This alarm is called fight or flight. It is your body’s way of getting ready for a challenge.
When you feel scared, your brain sends a message. It tells your body to be extra strong and fast.
Your heart pumps more blood to your legs and arms. This is why your heart beats so fast.
Your face might even feel hot and red. This is because your blood is moving around to help you.
You might breathe very quickly, too. This gives your body more air to work with.
Even your hands might get a little sweaty. This helps you grip things better.
A long time ago, this helped people run away from big animals. Today, it helps you when you have a big game or a test.
It can feel a little bit strange or even scary. But your body is actually trying to help you.
Your body is giving you more energy to do your best. It is making you ready to be brave.
Next time you feel those butterflies, take a deep breath. Slowly let the air out of your mouth.
Tell yourself that your body is just getting ready. You are strong and you can do hard things.
Your body is like a superhero that is waking up. It is okay to feel scared because it means you are about to be brave.
