February offers a mix of short texts that work well when readers have something to talk about together. Pair a biography with an informational passage, or use a reading about a tradition to practice describing what a text actually says. The calendar gives you a starting point for choosing a text that suits the group.
Open the February 11 readings for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Pause at a decision or discovery. Ask students what question the scientist was trying to answer, then find a sentence that helps explain the next step.
Find the Lunar New Year card in Dates to explore. Invite readers to name the community or family described, then record a detail about how they mark the occasion. When you read a second passage, compare the details the authors included. This makes space for differences across families and communities.
Try the February 2 selections on wetlands, or choose the Great Backyard Bird Count from the featured dates. Read for one detail about a habitat, then ask readers what they could look for outside or in an illustration. End by asking which part of the text helped them decide.
Use a few minutes at the end of a reading to invite different answers. One reader can describe what happened, another can identify the words that helped, and another can ask a follow-up question. Rotate those roles on the next date so everyone has a chance to practice listening, reading, and responding.
