An Autumn Day in Connecticut

Maya zipped up her jacket against the chilly October breeze as her grandmother drove down a winding road in northwestern Connecticut. Out the car window, the hills looked like a giant, colorful quilt woven from blazing red, orange, and bright yellow leaves. Autumn was Maya’s favorite season, and today was full of simple New England adventures.

Their first stop was the historic West Cornwall Covered Bridge. As they drove across the Housatonic River, the heavy wooden planks creaked and clattered beneath the tires. Maya leaned toward the window, peering through the narrow openings at the sparkling water below.

"This bridge was built way back in 1864," Grandma explained as they parked nearby to take a closer look. "It is one of the few covered bridges still standing in the state."

Maya and her brother, Leo, walked down to the rocky riverbank. They skipped smooth stones across the water while taking pictures of the bright red wooden bridge framed by vibrant trees.

Next, they headed to a family-owned orchard nestled on a nearby hillside. The air smelled sweet, filled with the scent of ripe apples and fallen leaves. Maya grabbed a canvas bag, and the family set off through the long rows of trees. Leo reached up to pick a shiny apple from a tall branch, while Maya searched for the crispest Honeycrisp apples she could find along the lower boughs.

After filling their bags to the brim, they sat at a wooden picnic table near the farm stand. Grandma bought three paper cups filled with steaming, spiced apple cider along with a box of warm cider donuts coated in cinnamon sugar.

As Maya took a bite of the sweet donut, she watched the afternoon sun begin to dip behind the hills, casting a golden glow over the valley. It had been a relaxing day, but exploring the quiet towns and bright forests made it a perfect Saturday.
