Cows are large animals that live on farms all over the world. They are very gentle and spend most of their time eating and resting. Farmers take care of cows because they are very helpful to people. Most cows live in big fields called pastures where they can roam around. They like to stay together in groups called herds.
You can see cows in many different colors and patterns. Some cows are black and white with big spots. Other cows are solid brown, red, or even all black. They have very big bodies and long tails to swat away flies. Many cows also have big ears and wet noses. Some cows have horns on top of their heads to protect themselves.
Cows love to eat grass more than anything else. They spend many hours each day chewing their food in the fields. Did you know that cows have a special way of eating? They swallow their food and then bring it back up to chew it again. This is called chewing the cud. It helps them get all the energy from the tough grass they eat.
A baby cow is called a calf. Calves drink milk from their mothers to grow big and strong. Mother cows have a part called an udder where they keep their milk. Farmers use special machines to collect the milk from cows every morning and night. This milk is cleaned and then sent to stores for people to buy.
Cows are very important animals for humans. Without cows, we would not have tasty things like butter, cheese, or ice cream. They are hard workers that help provide food for many families. Farmers make sure they have plenty of water and a warm barn to sleep in at night. Next time you see a cow in a field, you can remember how much they do for us.
