Leo’s Big Breath

The sun beat down on the community soccer field as the Rockets faced off against the Tigers. The score was tied, and there were only three minutes left on the clock. Leo could feel the sweat dripping down his forehead, but it wasn't just the heat making him feel uneasy. His heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Suddenly, the ball rolled right toward him. This was it! Leo took a powerful swing, aiming for the corner of the net. But instead of the satisfying 'thwack' of the ball hitting the goal, he heard the sharp whistle of the referee. The ball had soared high over the crossbar and landed far out of bounds.

Leo felt a surge of hot frustration rise from his chest to his face. His hands clenched into tight fists, and he felt like he might explode or burst into tears. He started to stomp his foot, ready to yell at himself for missing such an easy shot. Then, he remembered what Coach Miller had told him during practice: 'When the game gets too loud in your head, find your breath.'

Leo stopped in his tracks and closed his eyes for a moment. He ignored the shouting of the crowd and the heavy thudding of other players running nearby. He took a slow, deep breath in through his nose, counting to four. He felt his lungs fill with cool air. Then, he let the breath out slowly through his mouth, imagining all that hot anger leaving his body like steam from a kettle.

He did it one more time. On the second exhale, his shoulders dropped away from his ears, and his fists relaxed. The world didn't feel quite so overwhelming anymore. When he opened his eyes, he wasn't thinking about the missed goal. He was ready for the next play. He gave a quick nod to his teammate and jogged back into position, feeling steady, calm, and focused.
