A Note of Thanks to Mr. Alvarez

October 18, 2024
Dear Mr. Alvarez,
I am writing this letter to thank you for hosting the Saturday morning woodworking workshop at the Maple Valley Community Center. Our fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Chen, encouraged everyone in our class to try a new hands-on activity this autumn. I was a little nervous when my dad first dropped me off because I had never used real carpenter tools before, but your workshop turned out to be the highlight of my entire month.
My favorite part of the morning was building the cedar bluebird nesting box from scratch. At first, looking at the rough stack of lumber on my workbench felt overwhelming. I wondered how four flat boards could ever become a sturdy home for wild birds. You made the process manageable by breaking everything down into clear, patient steps. First, you taught us how to hold a steel measuring tape properly and use a carpenter square to mark straight lines with a pencil. I learned the old rule you shared: "Measure twice, cut once." That phrase made total sense once I realized that cutting a board even an eighth of an inch too short meant the roof wouldn't fit tightly against the back wall.
