To the Members of the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission,
I am writing to you today as a concerned student and resident of Oklahoma to advocate for urgent, concrete measures to protect our state bird, the Scissortail Flycatcher, and its diminishing natural grassland habitat. Known for its striking deeply forked tail, soft salmon-pink flanks, and remarkable aerial acrobatics, this magnificent bird is far more than a decorative symbol on our state quarter or license plates. It is a vital component of Oklahoma's native prairie ecosystem and a living emblem of our rich natural heritage. Unfortunately, rapid habitat destruction and agricultural shifts are placing unprecedented pressure on these birds, threatening their long-term survival across our state.
The primary threat facing the Scissortail Flycatcher is the fragmentation and loss of tallgrass and mixed-grass prairies. As urban areas expand and open pastures are converted into commercial developments or monoculture cropland, the open landscapes that flycatchers rely on for hunting and nesting are rapidly disappearing. Scissortail Flycatchers depend on scattered trees, shrubs, and utility wires bordering vast, open grasslands where they can spot flying insects from a distance and capture them mid-air with incredible speed. When these vast fields are paved over or stripped of native vegetation, flycatchers lose both their food sources and the secure nesting sites critical for rearing their young.
Beyond their aesthetic and cultural value, Scissortail Flycatchers perform essential ecological services that directly benefit Oklahomans, particularly our agricultural communities. As specialized insectivores, these birds consume vast quantities of agricultural pests, including grasshoppers, beetles, wasps, and moths. By maintaining healthy, robust populations of flycatchers, local farmers benefit from a natural form of pest control. This natural balance reduces the need for heavy chemical pesticides that can disrupt soil biology, contaminate groundwater, and harm other wildlife species. Protecting the habitat of the flycatcher is, therefore, not merely an act of environmental sentimentality; it is a practical investment in the ecological and economic health of our state.
To ensure that future generations of Oklahomans can witness the breathtaking sight of a Scissortail Flycatcher leaping into the prairie sky, we must act decisively. I urge the Commission to establish protected wildlife corridors across key grassland regions, offer financial incentives for landowners who maintain native prairie buffers, and restrict heavy pesticide usage during the bird's critical spring nesting season. Environmental stewardship requires us to balance human growth with the preservation of the natural world. Protecting the Scissortail Flycatcher is a necessary and achievable step toward safeguarding the wild heart of Oklahoma.
Thank you for your time, dedication, and leadership in protecting our state's precious natural resources.
Sincerely,
Mary Student Representative, Oklahoma Youth Conservation Network
