Reindeer live in very cold places with lots of snow and ice. The freezing wind blows across the land all day and night. How do these large animals stay warm and safe? Reindeer have special bodies that are built just for winter.

First, reindeer have thick coats of fur. Their fur has two layers to trap body heat. The hairs are hollow like tiny tubes, which helps hold in warm air. Even their noses are covered in soft fur! Their special noses warm up the icy air before it goes into their lungs.

Reindeer also have amazing feet for walking on snow. Their hooves are extra wide, just like snowshoes. This shape keeps the heavy reindeer from sinking deep into the white drifts. In winter, the edges of their hooves get hard and sharp. They use these sharp edges to dig through hard ice to find tasty plants to eat.

Did you know that a reindeer's eyes can change color? In the bright summer, their eyes are golden. In the dark winter, their eyes turn deep blue! This cool change helps them see much better in the dim winter light. Reindeer are truly built to survive the freezing Arctic cold.
