An explanatory article can show how a process works; a report gives facts to gather and summarize. A news article lets readers identify the event and details, while an interview presents information through questions and answers.

A useful partner routine is to take turns being the detail finder and the explainer. One reader points to a fact; the other says how it helps explain the topic. Then switch roles with a new question. Children can use the ideas they discussed to compose a short summary in their own words.
