Long ago, a very smart man named Archimedes lived in ancient Greece. He loved math and science. Archimedes spent his time solving tricky problems and discovering how things worked. He created ideas that people still use today.

One thing Archimedes studied was the lever. A lever is a simple machine that makes lifting heavy objects much easier. It is like a long board or stick placed over a pivot point. When you push down on one end, the other end goes up. Archimedes realized that with a long enough lever, a person could move almost anything. He even boasted that he could move the whole world if he had a big enough lever!

Archimedes also wanted to help farmers get water up to their dry crops. Moving heavy buckets of water up a hill was hard work. To fix this, he created a giant screw inside a long pipe. When a person turned the handle, the screw scooped up water and carried it up the tube. People called this invention the Archimedes screw. It acted like a water elevator.

Archimedes was a wonderful thinker who helped make hard work much easier for everyone. Today, engineers and builders still use levers and screws to build machines, tools, and heavy buildings.
