Behind the Blue Ribbon

Characters:
- Narrator
- Maya, an energetic fifth grader who led the presentation
- Julian, an enthusiastic builder who constructed the display
- Sam, a thoughtful classmate who worked quietly on data
Narrator: It was Friday afternoon in Room 204. Bright blue and yellow posters covered the walls for the annual fifth-grade Science Showcase. In the center of the room sat a massive cardboard model of a renewable energy wind turbine. Beside it, a shiny blue ribbon fluttered in the breeze of the open window.
Maya: (Grinning and pointing at the ribbon) We actually did it! First place! Did you hear how loud everyone clapped when I explained the gear system?
Julian: (Beaming) They loved it! But honestly, Maya, the real magic was the moving blades. I spent three whole days cutting that thick foam board and painting the tower silver so it looked authentic.
Narrator: Maya and Julian admired the display, pointing out the polished trim and the neat headline banner across the top. Standing a few steps back, with a clipboard in his hands, was Sam.
Sam: (Softly) It really does look great. I’m glad the judges liked the gear ratios.
Julian: Loved them, Sam! The judge, Dr. Chen, specifically pointed to the turbine blades and said our mechanical design was the sharpest in the whole gym.
