Free 5th Grade Reading Passages

Fifth grade reading often asks students to connect ideas, explain their thinking and use evidence from the text. PicoBuddy offers 5th grade reading passages that help students practice comprehension with engaging topics, clear questions and flexible formats.

Every PicoBuddy passage includes comprehension questions, an online quiz, a free PDF download and an editable Word download. Teachers can use the PDF for classroom work, assign the online quiz for quick practice or adjust the Word version when a passage needs to match a lesson more closely. Parents, homeschoolers and tutors can use the same resources for extra support at home or in one-on-one sessions.

Grade 5 reading passages are useful for skills such as main idea, inference, theme, vocabulary in context, compare and contrast, cause and effect, author’s purpose, summarizing and text evidence. Students can practice with fiction passages, informational texts, readers theater scripts and functional texts, giving them experience with both literary and real-world reading.

These passages can be used for whole-class lessons, small group reading, homework, reading centers, intervention, test preparation or independent practice. The variety of topics helps keep reading from feeling repetitive.

If you teach at home, the homeschool page gives more context for using PicoBuddy in a flexible learning routine. If you need a passage that matches a specific lesson, you can also create a custom reading passage by choosing the topic, grade level and text type.

PicoBuddy helps make Grade 5 reading practice easier to prepare and more engaging for students.
