Behind the Mending Desk: Secrets of a Book Doctor

Libraries are busy places where hundreds of books travel from backpacks to bedside tables every week. Over time, pages tear, covers bend, and spines begin to crack. At the Maple Creek Community Library, book conservator Marcus Lin works at a dedicated repair bench to give damaged volumes a second life. We sat down with Marcus to discover how he mends worn pages and how young readers can decide when a beloved book needs professional attention.
Interviewer: Marcus, many students call you the "book doctor." What exactly does a book conservator do all day?
Marcus Lin: That nickname makes me smile, but it actually describes my work quite well! Just like a doctor examines a patient, I inspect every hurt book that lands on my desk. My primary job is preservation, which means keeping original materials intact for as long as possible. Some days I reattach loose pages using specialized paste. Other days, I rebuild broken spines or clean stained covers. My ultimate goal is to return each book to the shelves so dozens of other children can enjoy reading it.
Interviewer: When a page rips at home or in class, many people immediately grab a roll of clear plastic tape. Is that a good solution?
